Curation Assignment

In a world where freedom of speech is not allowed, five people were able to break the chains and say the things that others are afraid to say. These five people created a cartoon channel that combines humor with multiple social and political issues that Egyptians are facing. One of the people behind this channel is Hesham Afifi, a Facebook influencer known for his comedian songs;he is one of the people that voice over the cartoon. Hesham afifi appeared before in Abla Fahita show and his voice is very familiar to the people who watch him on Facebook. In addition, the person who directs the show is Doctor Ashraf Hamdy, who was the creator of Kharbeesh.com and he was even a guest of Bassem Youssef on his show that was aired on ONTV.

I don’t know how they were able to escape the bureaucracy of our government and deliver a bold content that we normally do not see in Egyptian media. However, my interest in this chanel begun after the 30th of june revolution; they had created an episode that display the events of this period in a very expressive and funny way (you can watch the video below )  . I have seen this video not long after my favorite talk show ” El Bernamg” was cancelled and the presenter Bassem Youssef was attacked by Egyptian officials and  Media.

I remember saying to myself that the people behind this channel would probably go to prison soon. People in Egypt are used to be silent, but this cartoon channel was anything but silent. Since then, they have been raising awareness on a lot of issues in the Egyptian community. They have created videos on sexual harassment, fraud, Wasta, problems we face when doing governmental paperwork & everyday problems that Egyptians experience.

Their most bold topics are on political figures. however, one of my favorite episodes is about an Egyptian citizen that has been in a coma for the past five years. The last thing he remembers was the 25th of january revolution. His friend tries to summarize the events that happened in those five years. When you watch this video, you could see how this young activist receive the news and it instantly makes you feel the disappointment he’s experiencing. (you can watch the video below )

The channel has became more popular along the years and has now reached about two million subscriptions; their most watched video has about twenty three million views.Screen Shot 2019-05-09 at 3.53.04 AMThe reason I chose this Youtube channel is because it is one of the few places where you could hear people’s real opinions. It is the voice of one hundred million Egyptians who are scared to speak on many important issues. The media biases made a lot of people like myself avoid watching the news or any sort of TV content; even the TV series and movies are always portraying Egyptians in a way that does not represents them, and in my opinion they are sometimes affected by political plans. This sort of true  and meaningful content is what I want to watch, and I think many Egyptians would agree with me. They have used their talents and their digital presence to influence millions and raise awareness on everything that is going wrong in this country
